Biased Witnesses: Crystal Thermal Records May Give Conflicting Accounts of Magma Cooling

چکیده

Crystals retain an imprint of the dynamic changes within a magma reservoir and hence contain invaluable information about evolving conditions inside volcanic plumbing systems. However, instead telling single, simple story, they comprise overprinted evidence numerous processes relating to temperature, pressure composition that drive crystal precipitation dissolution in magmatic To decipher these different elements story crystals tell, we attempt identify observational signatures simple, yet ubiquitous process: during cooling. isolate this process complex system with intricate feedbacks, assume synthetic precipitate dissolve rapidly response deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium. In our crystalline-scale simulations, drag along cooler-than-ambient melt which precipitated can temperature-dependent, crystal-driven convection. We analyze non-dimensional for coupled convection record heterogeneous thermal histories flow regime experience. show many dissolve, loosing their Based on findings, suggest heterogeneity history is more indicative local, crystal-scale than overall, system-wide cooling trend.

Crystal sizes in evolving silicic magma chambers

Crystal size distributions (CSDs) of quartz and zircon phenocrysts in individual pumice clasts from several voluminous ash-flow tuffs provide a quenched snapshot view of conditions in preclimactic magma chambers. A common feature of these CSDs is a concavedown, lognormal shape, in contrast to the reported linear CSDs in more mafic systems. This feature is interpreted to be a general result of s...

Cooling magma model for deep volcanic long-period earthquakes

Deep long-period events (DLP events) or deep low-frequency earthquakes (deep LFEs) are deep earthquakes that radiate low-frequency seismic waves. While tectonic deep LFEs on plate boundaries are thought to be slip events, there have only been a limited number of studies on the physical mechanism of volcanic DLP events around the Moho (crust-mantle boundary) beneath volcanoes. One reasonable mec...

Thermal advection analysis of cooling waves of Iran

Survey of advection of cold waves in Iran is the main aim of this study. In this regard, 45 synoptic stations were employed and studied. In order to investigate the thermal advection of cold waves, 1000, 850, 700 and 500 hp levels were reviewed and analyzed. Results indicated that cold waves in Iran most affected thermal advection caused by Tibet- Siberia, Siberias integrated Turkmenistan high-...
